Take the Power Pledge and Show Your Commitment!

August 7, 2010

Join the World Wildlife Foundation and the Ontario Power Authority in a cool initiative known as the Power Pledge!

The program invites you and all other Ontarians to pledge to reduce electricity consumptin in your daily life! Simply select your personal goals and commit yourself to reduce your energy usage! You will be rewarded with AIR MILES® and, even better, additional AIR MILES® can be donated to the charity of your choice!

Visit www.powerpledge.ca to declare your commitment to reducing energy consumption! The website also lists other participants and some data on how much energy and money we are collectively saving, as well as the amount of greenhouse gas savings to which we've contributed!

Share this initiative with friends and family to increase the impact of our energy savings. This offer ends August 31, 2010 so hurry!

Now, if you are wondering about why they are offering AIR MILES®, well you are asking a very valid question. The FAQ section at www.powerpledge.ca goes through this well. Briefly, the idea is that AIR MILES® has proven to be a strong incentive for Canadians to make eco-friendly choices, and AIR MILES® has consistently been involved in programs that support environmentally-friendly consumer decisions. And at any rate, the amount of AIR MILES® offered is capped at the first 150,000 pledges made.

Currently there are just under 120,000 pledges so if you want those miles, sign up now!

SDE student designs for sustainability!

“Eleven student groups in a third-year systems design engineering course will present an exhibition of product designs that tackle energy harvesting and sustainability, making use of ambient and wasted energy sources for uses that address current shortcomings in the home,” says an invitation sent by SDE professor John Zelek, who supervises the students. The exhibition takes place Tuesday, July 27, 1 to 3 p.m., in Davis Centre room 1301 (the Fishbowl). Designs address a variety of problems, including "generating energy from human waste... generating energy from computer input devices and wheelchairs, creating light sources for the Third World," and more.
